Starting Thursday May 21, religious gatherings of no more than 10 people will become LEGAL again in New York State. Governor Andrew Cuomo says strict social distancing measures will be enforced and participants must wear masks.
Cuomo reiterated the importance of wearing a mask saying, “If people are smart, and if people are responsible…if individuals are responsible, you will see infection rates slow, It is amazing how effective a mask is.”
The Governor also said that religious organizations would be allowed to hold parking lot and drive-in services and suggested that such venues should be considered as an alternative to regular synagogues. Of course these Minyanim are dependent on the participants maintaining strict social distancing and masks must be worn.
NY Senator Simcha Felder issued the following statement for immediate release:
“Prayer services are integral to every religious community. We worked diligently to allow minyanim in our shuls. I want to thank Governor Cuomo for announcing today that religious services are permitted.”
